Chapter Sixteen

I looked at Lacey, really studying her. She had a fierce determination etched on her face below her poufy bleached blonde pile of hair. I tried my hardest to keep an open mind about her offer, but her look reminded me of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

The stubborn clench in Lacey’s jaw and her over-the-top make-up and hairstyle reminded me of a pit bull mixed with a poodle. Did that make her a Pitdle or a Pitpoo? Pitpoo sounded best.

“What’s so funny?” Dash asked.

Apparently, I’d laughed out loud, and now my little crew consisting of Birdie, Dash, Audrey, and yes, even Lacey stared at me like I’d lost my mind. Probably somewhere between the two murder victims, I suppose. Another giggle erupted from my chest.

With a herculean effort, I wiped what I assumed was a silly grin off my face and said, “Lacey, you can help under one condition.”

“Sure,” she said without an ounce of hesitation. With her pinky, she dabbed crumbs off the edge of her lips and waited politely for me to utter my demand.

Birdie, with one eyebrow raised in an I-can’t-wait-to-hear-what’s next slant, said nothing, but her silence always unnerved me to a certain degree. She knew me so well I was positive she’d already guessed what had come between my friendship with Lacey more than ten years earlier.

I took a deep breath. It was now or never to get this out of my system. The new me wasn’t going to worry about someone else’s feelings over my own. I didn’t mean that in a rude way, of course, but I had to be true to myself. Life was too short for dancing around a bush filled with nonsense. Right?

“Lacey,” I said with the assurance I felt deep within myself, “you have to promise to be honest with me all the time. And no interfering in any way whatsoever if I find a special someone.”

Lacey stared at me as if I’d just landed from Mars.

“When we were teenagers,” I said, “you always tried to steal every guy I even looked at twice during my summer vacations here.”

I should have said that over ten years ago, but no, I never straightened things out. I’d let it simmer and bug me since we were eighteen. Fourteen years was long enough. I felt lighter already.

Lacey stared at me. “I wasn’t interested in those goofy boys.”

“You weren’t? Why’d you do it then?” This didn’t add up to what I’d always imagined.

“I was interested in you, silly.” Then she laughed so hard I wondered if she’d peed herself. Birdie joined the hysteria. I couldn’t see Audrey, but I imagined she left for fear of being unable to control herself after hearing that declaration.

Me? If the heat factor in my face meant anything, I had to be several shades darker than Birdie’s new red hairdo. My smug expression vanished, and I felt like I’d inhaled a rotten peach.

“Oh, my goodness, Nikki,” Lacey said between hiccups of laughter. “I wasn’t interested in you the way you’re thinking.
